Maintain Carriage Returns in Text Area while inserting in DB

Hi All

I have form witht text area.
The user enters some description and submits and it gets inserted in database.
But, say if the user enters some space, carriage return in the data he has entered and then submits..
the whole data gets inserted as one paragraph and when i display it..it displays as one big paragraph.

I want to maintain the spaces and carriage returns in the same way when i display the page.
BY the way column in DB is CLOB.

How do i maintain the spaces and carriage returns ?

This web application is in Java.
