Getting Unique Id of a system

How can get an unique idenifier or ID (Any thing) in JAVA? Is it possible to get mother board time??

To clarify: AFAIK in Java a UUID is just a unique id unrelated to the system

java UUID would guarantee uniqueness (irrespective of system):

UUID uid = UUID.randomUUID();
String id = uid.toString();

If you run this code again and again, you would get different uuid

or alternatively the mac address of the machine?

If you want to use the MAC address, the code i posted is easy to modify to do that. Let me know if you need help
