Data Import / Export Pattern

Hi There

One of the tasks I continually need to do is read data from one source and write it to a target.

Data sources include text files, access databases, oracle databases, proprietary finance software such as Iress, Datascope, Kondor ... etc.

Data targets are usually large proprietry applications such as Calypso, but they can include text files, databases and smaller proprietary applications.

The project I am currently on has a large component of data import/export and I would like to implement a pattern that decouples the data source reading from the data writing.  

Are there any established patterns that can do what I am after ?

I am not sure if there are any such patterns. What I would suggest is the following.

1. Export the data from various input datasources to common pattern like csv files. (This is an extra step cost step)
2. Import from these csv files to corresponding targets.

And use factory pattern for the above two steps.

You should look at hibernate, it provides ready frame work for data access and data writing.

Similarly JClient FrameWork does the same. You just need to create your objects (entities) and the rest is taken care of by JDeveloper.

As for patterns, check out DAO.

This is not about decoupling import and export, but rather the read/write interface with the data source.  But you should be able to apply that so you can import from whatever and export to whatever.
