Any lengthy processing should not be done in the event queue thread as this will block gui events, such as requests for the app to paint its gui

This window loads when the program launces. 90% of the time it is hollow like this. The program is packaged as a .jar file that is called from a batch file (using the "start" command to bump up memory allocation and CPU priority). Running the .jar file directly (which invokes javaw.exe) produces the same result.
