Advice on implementation

I am trying to write a program in JAVA that can open a song from a file (this i can do) and detect beats in a song. When it detects a beat it should beat detected and also count the number of beats. My concern is how to start this type of code. What is the logic of the program in stages. Speedy advice would be very much appreciated. It may also be useful to code in Matlab. Start Free Trial
