Question

Converting Vector to String and back to Vector

Asked by: sandeep1984

For the below program I will get the output as
[1, 2, [3, 4, 5], 6]

First I will create a vector then convert it to string.
Now what I have to do is convert this string back to vector.

Thanks.

Vector vec = new Vector();
		vec.addElement("1");
		vec.addElement("2");
		Vector temp = new Vector();
		temp.addElement("3");
		temp.addElement("4");
		temp.addElement("5");
		vec.addElement(temp);
		vec.addElement("6");

		String vecString = vec.toString();
		System.out.println(vecString);

Split with String split() api.. which returns an array.

Create a vector from array.. again..

by: sandeep1984Posted on 2008-03-10 at 00:18:46ID: 21084538

Split will not work fine for this string
[1, 2, [3, 4, 5], 6]

Since this is a multidimensional Vector.

What exactly I am trying to do is

I want to get the file structure view of a particular folder from a server and display the things in the client.
This should look like Windows Explorer.

by: gnoonPosted on 2008-03-10 at 00:35:25ID: 21084589

Hi sandeep,

1. The delimeter shall not be comma(,) because it's a valid character of filename on some OS, pipe(|) is ok.
2. [ and ] are also valid for filename. Change to <> is ok.
3. File structure as above is ok. You can parse it recursively. A <> represents a Vector.

If you don't mind what format in a file, you may consider another approach, serializing (or saving) a vector to file http://www.java2s.com/Code/Java/Collections-Data-Structure/Serializingavector.htm.

Here is the code that does the job..

 String x[] = "2, 3, [666, 12, 234], 4, [23], [24, 34]".split(",");
         Vector vec = new Vector();
         for(int i = 0; i < x.length; i++)
         {
           System.out.println(x[i]);
           if(x[i].startsWith("["))
           {
             Vector temp = new Vector();
             while(i < x.length)
             {
               if (x[i].endsWith("]"))
               {
                 temp.add(x[i].substring(0, x[i++].length()-1).trim());
                 break;
               }
               else if (x[i].startsWith("["))
               {
                 temp.add(x[i++].substring(1,x[i++].length()).trim());
               }
               else
                  temp.add(x[i++].trim());
             }
              vec.add(temp);
              System.out.println("internal: " + temp);
           }

I think, [1, 2, [3, 4, 5], 6] is getting generated from calling vector.toString() function..

toString() function of vector will simply iterates over the elements of Vector and call its toString() functions inturn, and separates each element with ",".

If the elements itself contains characters "[" ,"]" or "," then its difficult to get back the vector from string...

Why do you want to convert the vector representation to string and then back to vector ?

by: sandeep1984Posted on 2008-03-10 at 01:32:54ID: 21084776

Thanks.
Because I want to pass the values over Http.(From my servlet to Java Client).
And in client I want to display it using JTree. (It should display only folders, not files. Files should be displayed in a separate area, like in Windows Explorer.

What kind of info will you put into this Vector - how will you know, if it is a file or a folder?

by: cmalakarPosted on 2008-03-10 at 01:48:26ID: 21084823

>> Because I want to pass the values over Http.(From my servlet to Java Client).

Best option is to use.. Serialization..

Serialize the vector from server.. and deserialize the vector at client, you will get the correct object..

Then you can do, what ever you want at client side..

As i mentioned in your other question, serialize a DefaultTreeModel

Create an instance of this from your root directory and serialize it as i mentioned in your other q:

It is removing 6 from the vector.
I think we need to use stack.

by: cmalakarPosted on 2008-03-14 at 03:51:27ID: 21124268

oops.. With nested vectors.. it's not working..

Wait..
