I want to create a java chat application without GUI as a project .The chat should implement DES for security or some easier option.I would like to know step by step procedure how to do this.

I would like to create a java chat application as a project.This chat application need not have GUI .I have to implement some security mechanism like DES.Please suggest a step by step procedure to do this.I am learning java.If there is any other way (easier) to implement security in chat .Please suggest too.
