Progress bar swing

I wan to show progress bar for follwing task.
1. Hit the database
2.Get values from database.
3.Campare values with another file column.
4.Generate result xls sheet.

I need steps how to do this.
like..
1.Create GUI.
2.create the thread [what to do  there?]
or what to do in timer like this...

Any example will be useful.
Plz dont point to sun site examples. I tried that but not able to progess bar updation..
it is only getting showed after complition of task..
