Find out how big applet heap at runtime

Is there a way to find out how much memory has been allocated for the heap at runtime?  Assume that the page loading the applet has used the Xmx parameter to modify the heap size.  My applet is continuing to suffer from memory issues, depending on how it is used.

memory options are specified in the java control panel
