Question

I get a NoClassDefFoundError but the class is right there.

I'm working with j2sdk1.4.2 on a Windows XP maching and here's what i see in the command line just now:

>javac -classpath ojdbc14.jar NOTI_PROG.java

>java -cp ojdbc14.jar NOTI_PROG
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: NOTI_PROG

>dir /b
CS1234
ojdbc14.jar
NOTI_PROG.class
NOTI_PROG.java
NOTI_PROG.properties

I can't understand why I'm getting the "NoClassDefFoundError" when my class file is right there; and I'm quite confident that everything is defined/declared/structured right inside my program because this only started happening once I added the code to connect to the oracle database...

Try with
javac -classpath ./ojdbc14.jar NOTI_PROG.java

Your problem is because the current directory is not added to the classpath by default. Only time it gets added is if the classpath is empty.
So what you need to do is add the current directy (or the path of the directory that contains the class) to your classpath
