The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Making a Java app web accessible

I am working on a Java app that allows the accountant to review and validate invoices, and am looking for ways to allow multiple accountants across the country to use the app tied to a central database.

Background...
There may be 200,000+ invoices, I show them (or a sublist of them) in a grid.  When the user clicks on one, multiple windows get updated:
1. a window that shows the invoice's detail line items (grid-like)
2. a window that shows scanned tiff images of the invoice (can be multiple pages, they can press prev/next to scroll)
3. a window that shows additional text and information, allowing them to annotate the invoice and press "update" when done.

The data comes from Derby using JDBC.

This is a simple app and works well on one machine.  They now want to allow multiple users to access this app remotely, through the web or by downloading the app, having the data hosted on a central machine (and not their individual machine).

I realize I have to do some additional work for lock or hold records, so if one user is reviewing and annotating a document, another user can't update the same record.

The questions...
I'm not sure what my options are for making the app run on multiple machines, having the data be centralized.  If it was a local network, I could just give each person a copy of the app and have JDBC connect to the data.  But the users can be across the country, so what are my options?

If possible, I would like to avoid complex infrastructures since this is a simple app, but using them is not out of the question.

Multiple responses and suggestions are welcome, and I will split points to each suggestion.  If there are other Expert Exchange zones I should send this question to, please let me know!
