Browse All TopicsI am trying Matlab for essentially the first time and am trying to calculate the gradient of a function. I am getting this error:
??? Error using ==> zeros
Trailing string input must be a valid numeric class name.
Error in ==> gradient at 65
g = zeros(size(f),class(f)); % case of singleton dimension
My code is:
syms x;
syms y;
F = x^4+3*x^2*y+5*y^2+x+y;
[FX,FY] = gradient(F);
As I said, I am pretty much brand new at this Matlab business; it's probably a simple problem. I hope it is!

Hi,
Mathematically speaking Gradient is the derivative vector function with respect to variables.
if F=x^2+y^2 then gradient is equal to gradF=2xi=2yj
>> syms x
>> syms y
>> syms F
>> F=x^2+y^2
F =
x^2+y^2
>> grad=diff(F,x)+diff(F,y)
grad =
2*x+2*y
