Matlab to replace stored procedure

Hi experts:

Can anyone let me know whether Matlab is capable of doing all that a stored procedure can do?

I have an Excel application that uses VBA to invoke a stored procedure. The stored procedure pulls data out of database, does some joins and calculations and returns the resulting data set back to VBA. The VBA then outputs the table to a worksheet.

The application works but when huge amount of data is involved, the application could take hours to run. I have heard that Matlab is very efficient in doing math. I wonder if it's a good replacement for stored procedure. i.e. Can VBA (or C# or java etc)  invoke matlab application? Can Matlab takes two huge tables, join them, calculate the average, sum, standard deviation etc by doing aggregation, and then return the result to the calling applicaiton? And, is Matlab more efficient than a stored procedure?

I am using SQL Server 2005.

Thanks.

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is.
