Question

How to keep track the minimum value in a loop?

I have the code below. Also the function findsim(image1, image2) return the similarity of two picture. Now I want to calculate the first result, save it, calculate the next one compare to the first one, if the result now < the first result, save this new result. Do that until the last comparison and print the minimum result.
Below is my initial code:
Please take a look and give me some suggestions.

I guess lines 7-8 should rather look like

tmp = findsim( ...)
if (tmp < minimum)
   minimum = tmp
end

Also, you need to initialize minimum to "plus infinity" or at least in unreachably big value

As a sidenote:
I assume that your findsim function is maybe symmetric(i.e. findsim(A,B) is always the same as findsim(B,A))
If so, the loop for index2 need only run to index1-1:  for idex2 = 1:(inex1-1)
This also makes the test againts index1=index2 redundant

Yes, my problem is how to initialize and keep track of the minimum value. Because with the 2 images which similar, this value is very small, about 10^(-5). But with the two different images, the value is large ~ 0.5 - 1. If I can initialize the value to make it work, it's not a problem.

Finally I have found the way to deal with this question. Here is my solution:

	if (i == 1)
		min = findsim(imageList{1}, imageList{2});
		temp = 2;
	else 
		min = findsim(imageList{i}, imageList{1});
		temp = 1;
	end	
    for j = 2:length(imageList)		
		if (j ~= i)
			if (findsim(imageList{i}, imageList{j}) < min)
				min = findsim(imageList{i}, imageList{j});
				temp = j;
			end
		end
	end
end

Sorry to say but your code has many unnecessary and duplicating steps. What do you need first temp=1 for? You save the second image as temp, but you don't save the first one. You do a lot of repeating function calls. You should read thehagman's comments more carefully. He was correct in every line. So I object not to give credit to thehagman.

Here I tried to make it simpler. I assume from the code you want to compare all possible image pairs and find the pair with minimum distance, correct?

mindist=1e3; % Just some arbitrary number, the largest distance ever possible. And don't call your variable min, it's a function.
for i = 1:length(imageList)-1
    for j = i+1:length(imageList)         
        temp = findsim(imageList{i}, imageList{j});
        if (temp < mindist)
            pair = [i j];
            mindist = temp;
        end
    end
end
fprintf('Minimum distance is %d between images %s and %s\n,...
    mindist, imageList{pair});
