You could be talking about Collaboration diagrams, often shown with swim lanes.  Or you could be talking about Sequence diagrams, which show time-ordered sequence of events and responses.

Marklorenz is correct in the second post. I would use activity diagrams to show: "what the system actually does instead of how it is done"
