on the mssql cd there is a tool to do this
it requires some configuration.
it's known as DTS: Data Transformation Services

You specify a odbc source (your paradox) and a destination (a mssql)
and this process should do the rest

why reinvent the wheel ?

why reinvent the wheel ?why reinvent the wheel ?

need this function many time, plan is two versions of  our software,
simple low feature = paradox database
power user = full speed MSSQL Server

therefore code is highly welcome ....

by: BdLmPosted on 2009-10-30 at 05:14:28ID: 25702128

BTW: do not have the MSSQL CD, use now Express edition, is the tool available in the internet

by: Geert_GruwezPosted on 2009-10-30 at 05:21:28ID: 25702188

a decade ago i had this too

it's easier to allways give the mssexpress edition and just give a different exe
or use a different license key

you would only have 1 install
and moreover only 1 sql language for your app
and only 1 pass to test (instead of testing on 2 types of databases)

you have a design maintenance of at least 3 people like this
with only the mssql you reduce this 1 person

this is just overhead, and not worth the time and money
believe i've done this for 2 years and all the work of those 2 years could have been done in 6 months

by: Geert_GruwezPosted on 2009-10-30 at 05:30:33ID: 25702244

let's say you need to implement a new feature

before: only paradox --> 3 days for new feature

now: paradox + mssql
you need to recreate your devs, tests, deploy, etc.
you also need to extend your knowledge for mssql and paradox

Next to that you need to cross test too: result time x 3 per feature

by: BdLmPosted on 2009-10-30 at 05:33:38ID: 25702275

OK, you strongly recommend a cut in the software and only support MSSQL in the near future.

yes,
it is from experience that i tell you this

we also had this plan to keep a paradox/dbase version and mssql version

it turned out there was a lot less maintenance on the mssql
(no rebuild index, no deletion by users of files, no paradox locking problems)

we could even give the maintenance stuff to others,
like backups to the network admins
and mirrored drives etc

and when you have a client which allready has a mssql server (not the express)
there is no work on your part for the database maintenance at all
just asking if they backup the database for you

you also get a lot more processing power and a lot more functionality in the database

you will need a conversion program (separate from your app)
i have created this in the past
if you are interested in this, then i will upload it
(it was for dbase to mssql)

the thing you need to do is create a script to create the database, tables, functions, procedures, triggers, etc on the mssql database
if the scripts are there, i'll upoad that too
again, if you are interested
