The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to build a Delphi app for the web?

Tags: Borland / Codegear, Delphi
I have been developing in Delphi since version 1 but never crossed over to .net or web applications and never saw a good summary description of how its done.  I think the following questions will give me the initial orientation I need to begin my own exploration.

Once compiled, what is the format of the application?  .asp?  asp.net?

If I compile a web app in Delphi do I need to place any special files on the server to run the application?

I can build, compile and run a sample COM application with a data driven grid within a few minutes.  Does a web application take significantly more steps?  If so, what are the nature of the additional steps?

I need to create a web based look up and entry portal that shares data with a 12 year old Delphi Windows application.  For web work I am fair with asp but my strength is PHP.  Knowing that any answer to this question will be very subjective, is it worth tackling the learning curve to use Delphi for the web app?

Thanks.

The biggest issue in learning web application programming in Delphi when you are coming from Win32 is that the two are absolutely different.

--Once compiled, what is the format of the application?  .asp?  asp.net?--
If you do an ASP.NET for Delphi application your output is an ISAPI DLL that needs to be deployed to your web server.

--If I compile a web app in Delphi do I need to place any special files on the server to run the application?--

If your project tries to access files in the same project at run time, those files will need to be there.  Otherwise it is just the DLL.

--I can build, compile and run a sample COM application with a data driven grid within a few minutes.  Does a web application take significantly more steps?  If so, what are the nature of the additional steps?--

While there are data aware grids for Delphi for .NET they are absolutely not the grids you are used to.  In Delphi 2007 for .NET you have access to one that will make it easy to sort the columns and even allow editing and deleting of records.  Having said that, you scroll through the records by using the web page scroll bar.

Delphi 2007 comes with several different technologies for doing web applications.  Delphi for ASP.NET is the one that I find most pleasant to work with due to limitations in the VCL for .NET.  It has been my experience that the VCL for the web style applications have some oddities that I personally find intolerable.  It tries to force the browser into acting as much like a Delphi application as possible.  One of the caveats to this approach is that you run into difficulties with the browser BACK button.

I think if you are more comfortable with PHP then the Delphi for PHP is probably your best bet.

Let me know if you need more.
