Question

Package Capture

Asked by: Greenandroid

Heya folks....

Anyone know of an extremely easy way to capture and display data packets sent to the computor?

I currently have the Packet Sniffer SDK components installed on my computor, but find the guidance supplied with them a little confusing, and have not yet managed to get them working. All i need to be able to do is display the contents of the packets of data being sent to a specific port on my computor.

If possible, the packet contents just need to be displayed in either a Tmemo or a Tedit

Does anyone know if this is possible to do with normal Tserversockets etc.

Anyhelp is greatly appreciated......

Kind Regards
GreenAndroid

ok it seems you've only given me the link to download the packet sniffer SDK components again. This is th same website i got them from, and have looks at the examples etc... the components arent compatible with my way of thinking, if you get my drift.

Is there any other ways you know of?
anyone?

Well, there is one protocol called WinPCap. It can be downloaded (with source) from:
   http://winpcap.polito.it/

I don't understand what you mean by "compatible with my way of thinking".

anAKiN, your soultion is by far the best so far, as it appears to be everything i need..... (here comes the big however).... as your solution from the other post mentions, i need to have the packet32 unit... where do i get this from... i get the error saying it cannot find it... is it me being dumb, or have i got to download it from somewhere?

Sorry, forgot about that file. Remember that you have to have WinPCap installed.

ok heres whats causing me difficulty....

i added the packets.dll files etc, and can now get the program to compile without error, HOWEVER the program does not actually do anything. pressing eithe rof the buttons does not display any packets of data etc.

This might well be due to WinPCap. The verson of WinPCap i downloaded was the developers edition, as i need to be able to distribute this program. Installing the other versions of WinPCap will mean the program will only work on computers with WinPCap installed too. Am i mistaken? If this IS the case, then this is no use to me at all.

If it is the devlopers edition of WinPCap i need, how do i go about using these in my application?

Thanks again
Greeny

have application detected your adapter and placed it in the ComboBox? i have tested that application on 2000, 2003 and XP systems and i have had no problems. try to install a stable version on WinPCap, if that won't help i won't probably be able to help you fixing that as i can't find any reason...

by: GreenandroidPosted on 2004-05-31 at 10:11:20ID: 11197715

im running xp, and the combobox displays question marks, not any adapters.

I think this method really isnt going to work...which leaves me back to square one again... im sure there must be a simple way to just display incoming packets.... *grunts* Thanks again anyway
