Question

DBGrid

Asked by: alim_maze

Hi,
while am using "ExpressQuantumGrid" or any DBGrid, I'd like to view the grid with a proper preferable column widths :
I invented some way to adjust the column widthes according to field name length but still this depends on font and resolution used in every PC :

ADOStoredProc1.Close;
ADOStoredProc1.ProcedureName:='MySPName';
ADOStoredProc1.Open;
cxGrid1DBTableView1.ClearItems;
cxGrid1DBTableView1.DataController.CreateAllItems;

 w:=0;
 for i:=0 to cxGrid1DBTableView1.ColumnCount-1 do
  begin
    cxGrid1DBTableView1.Columns[i].MinWidth:=length(dbgGetWO.Columns[i].Caption)*10;
    cxGrid1DBTableView1.Columns[i].Width:=length(dbgGetWO.Columns[i].Caption)*10;
    cxGrid1DBTableView1.Columns[i].HeaderAlignmentHorz:=taCenter;
// add column color
//    cxGrid1DBTableView1.Columns[i].Styles.Content.Color:=clred;
    w:=w+cxGrid1DBTableView1.Columns[i].Width;
  end;
 if w<Width then cxGrid1DBTableView1.Columns[i-1].Width:=(width-w)+100;

Request :
I want some way to wiew my database grid columns, just like if I double clicked on the column edge to adjust its width .
that means : " I need some methode ,in runtime, adjuets dbgrid column width to be adequated with data into it "

Regards,
Alim

So ... you want to autoAdjust the column Widths on a click... for the requested column...
This is a little bit hard to do.
 First you need to get the width of one character.
 Then you need to get the number of visible rows. Then pick up the fort record shown and the last one shown. Then between these records (for loop) find the longest string on the specified column.
Then with the lenght of the caracter multiplied by the Strlen of the longest string in the specified column you obtain the width that you need for the column.
Then it's just piece of cake...

"First you need to get the width of one character."
how would I do that ?! can you give an example ?
all what you said is rational , I thought in it earlier, but I observed that one character can take a diffrent space than another

Alim

dbGrid1.fields[ n].displayWidth:= 15

This will change the width of column n to 15 characters width;

Also you can get the width of a character using this
x:=Form1.Canvas.TextWidth('A');
Where the font is the default used font on the canvas.

Hi!

The widh of the text depends of the font settings, screen resolution, etc, and... the width of 'iiiiiii' is less than the width of 'WWWWWW' for example...

So... you must get the width of the text using the function TextWidth of the destination canvas to paint.

For example, the canvas DBGrid1 is DBGrid1.Canvas so... for get the width of any text painted in DBGrid you must use:

WidthOfTheText:=DBGrid1.Canvas.TextWidth('The example text');

For an automatic resizing of the columns, you must calculate the max width of the showed data...and for this work, there are several methods:

- Iterate trought all records of your table and calculate the Canvas.Textwidth of each value and get the max of them
This method is not valid for a large amount of data... its slow...

- Calculate the column width just getting the width of it column title:
This is faster, but very innacurate...

- Calculate the max width just of the records showed in the screen, not in all the table
This is faster than calculate the whole able but... its slow too because you must recalculate the max widths on every scroll of the grid...

- Calculate the max width 'On The Fly', while the DBGrid paints the cells:
This is fast and accurate.

The procedure is:
- Create a global array of integers for store the Max Widths while we calculate them
- In the OnDrawColumnCell of the DBGrid, calculate the max width of each column
- Later, when you want apply the automatic calculated sizes, pass the values of the dinamic array to the columns widths... globally (all the columns with just one click)  or in the OnClick of each column... as you wish.

Here you have the full unit of my testing project:

Has a TTable, a Ddatasource a DBGrid and a TButton

The button pass the calculated max widths to the columns widths.

Nice code RadikalQ3... based on TextWidth like I already suggested ...
Did you checkOut my first solution too?

You can set the column width through object inspector.
Double click on DBGrid > select the column and go to its property . There you can set the width.
You can manupulate the length of the field and can able to set the vaule for it. but it is not calculate dynamically and set the with with respect to the data in the column.

Hope this helps
