Remote program execution from Delphi

Asked by: david-marti

Hi,

Well you would just run this like any other normal application using ShellExecute.
You just need to make sure you have the full correct path to the network machine and the application name.

Sorry, I not explained correctly what I'm trying to do: The execution of the remote program MUST be on the remote computer, not on the computer that's requesting the execution.

I need to do the same that Sysinternals' psexec do (www.sysinternals.com)

Thanks.

From the Windows help i get the impression that ShellExecute and CreateProcess can only start processes on your local computer.
I think you will have to use RPC.

by: david-martiPosted on 2005-09-07 at 01:29:00ID: 14834670

Ok, but I don't know nothing about RPC. Any entry point?

Thanks.

Ah I see what you mean.

Could you possibly cheat and use a batch file located on the individual pc's to execute local programs?

by: david-martiPosted on 2005-09-07 at 04:48:30ID: 14835401

I'm searching for a solution for not install nothing on the remote computer. Using RPC can be a good thing, but I don't know how to do it ... Also I saw that will be posible using DCOM, but no idea.

Thanks.

Hi!

I think that this is possible to do with WMI, but my attempts for achieving this are (yet) placed in a way without exit...

My code just works locally...

lol :)

Thanks for your code ciuly! :) but is very similar to mine....
I thought that mine did not work, but yes, it does :)
The problem is that the program is executed in background... not interactively... XD

Ok, but I'm not very famliar with this. How about to create the TLB uses file? Any prerequisite on remote computer (this is, may I install something or with the standard installation all is posible?

Thanks

WMI is available with default installation since Win2k, and in the rest (w95, W98) it's installable.

Here is the Windows documentation:

ciuly:
You code (and mine) has a lot problem: if the remote computer has blocked the WMI ports (I dont know what ports are) with a firewall, the program raise a timeout yes, but the time is excesive... and I havent idea how change that time...

by: david-martiPosted on 2005-09-07 at 11:20:15ID: 14838953

Ok, I understand, sounds very interesting investigation, but ... how about the TBL file?

Thanks.

In the Delphi Ide, go to:

Project -> Import Type Library

And select the Wmi Scripting...

radikal:
first, sory for the timeout, I was out of for the past almsot 2 days. I didn't try the code against a computer behind a firewall but I did try to run another program/batch file that would start the targeted program using normal (shellexec/etc) but failed (this was the time when I started reading a little to see why :D). I'll have to read a little and see about that timeout. I noticed such timeouts on local connections when WMI was not present, but if I remember correctly it was around a minute, maybe a little more, but not very anoyingly big.
I'll look into it when I get a chanse, right now I'm caught up in other projects and have another issue that I can't figure out:)
I do have an idea though: - start a remote service that starts the desired application. I haven't tested this yet. I am also thinking on modifying the process space in order to get some more credentials and modify some attributes so that the process can become interactive. The idea is that when a process launches anotehr one, the child process inherits the attributes and credentials of the parent process. But the parent process can change this default behaviour and set the child process's attributes and credentials. So having a process that runs with administrative priviledges one could be able to turn that process into a "remote process lancher" and getting over the limitation of WMI. This comes from a lot of reading so I don't know exactly how to do it, but I do remember reading on stuff that makes me think that such program can be done. It's a matter of documenting which again takes time :) But I' put it on my TODO list for the future.
