The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

component for playing sounds (mp3)

Asked by gandalf_the_white in Delphi Programming

dear experts

as we are having problems with the eldos sound component we are on the
look for other ways to play the soundfiles in our programs.

here a short description of our adventures in the land of sound:

first we used the sndplaysound api call:
worked well until xp arrived. many sounds werent played at all.

next thing was to use the mediaplayer:
we are developing under delphi5 and the TMediaPlayer worked quite well.
until i got a machine where i wasnt able to hear short click sounds.
after a few tests the reason got clear:  the mediaplayer needs some time to
get loaded. problem is that during the time the timer for the wave isnt stopped.
that means if you have a wave with 125ms length and the mediaplayer need 100ms
to load then you hear the last 25ms of the wave.

Xaudio.dll was the component we used next for playing waves
was not too stable and we had to make many adjustments.
we maybe would have stayed with it but then came the next problem:

The Soundfiles are growing and need more than a CD. -> mp3 was needed

As a small company we cant afford to buy the licenses for 100k $ so we looked
for a "free for commercial use" component

so we found Eldos Sound
it worked well until we wanted to ship the master

my question now is:
with what do you play mp3's or waves?
are there good, usable sound components for commercial use?

regards
alfred
