The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Program written in Delphi 5 and using BDE - Is this out of date?

Asked by b1gd0g in Delphi Programming, Delphi Database

HI there,
I am not actually a programmer, but our company owns a piece of software that I am incharge of developing, selling, marketing, implementing and training. Our principal business is automotive parts, and although I know a lot about networks and PC's, i'm not a programmer. And I do not know very much about Delphi.
The problem is that the only person that I get any feedback from is the guy who writes the software, however, and despite good sales, recently I have felt as though we are a bit out of touch with available technology (The programmer is 58 years old and probably doesn't want to take on anything new). The program is still being written in Delphi 5 (C#). We use the Borland Database Engine. It is networked through file sharing and the data contains 295 tables and indices (Approx 120MB). Hopefully you get the picture.
My question is very simple. Are we out of date. Is there any advantage to SQL Server? Is there any advantage to using the Microsoft Database Engine instead of BDE? Is that even possible? Will Microsoft Vista cause a problem? Hopefully, some of you guys will have been in this position before and made a judgement. I would be very greatful if you would enlighten me to the possibilities or whether I should just let it be.
Its really just to get another perspective on the matter.
Many Thanks

b1gd0g
