Why not just do
0: Result := StrToIntDef(Testing.number
StrToIntDef = String to integer default. So if the passed integer isn't an integer it defaults to the second number.

you could use a function which may handle this exception like
l) - getInt(Testing.numberofbal l);
function getInt(AValue : AString) : Integer;
begin
try
result := StrToInt(AValue);
except
result := 0; //or -1, as you want
end;
end;
so the call could be changed to
0: Result := getInt(Testing.numberofbal
another way is to store the StudentID in the record as a integer instead of use of a string
