The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Miracle needed. (Overriding Windows colors)

Asked by Workshop_Alex in Delphi Programming

Well, my employer asks for miracles and in general, I just deliver them. :-) But now he wants to know if I can change the colors of an existing application within a very short amount of time. Basically, the application has 140+ forms which all use the default Windows colors for the controls, buttons, editboxes, etc.
Well, that wasn't difficult. I connected an event to Screen.OnActiveFormChange which will walk through all the controls on the active form and adjust the colors on each of them. Basically, about 80% of all colors are now configurable. What remains are the more complicated things...

My employer also wants a different color for popup menu's, for any selected text, for the form caption and several other parts of the controls which don't have any properties to set to change them. Thus, I need to override the way how my application gets the proper color values from the Windows system.

For example, the default color for selected text in an editbox is black text on a blue background. It needs to become blue text on an orange background.

Yes, I could create my own custom controls and forms which all have their own customdraw methods but that takes a lot of work, since it means I have to change 140 different forms. I need a more generic solution which can be applied to each and every control, no matter what kind of control it is.

I've considered to hook one or more Windows API functions which are used to retrieve these colors but would it work? And how should that be done?

And no, I can't add any third-party components to this project.
