I haven't found a suitable solution without use of third party components.
I have TExcelApplication available to use but there is not a whole lot of documentation online that I can find.

You will have to open the document on some level.
If you access the spreadsheet through a database connection (DAO or ADO), the database engine is opening the spreadsheet. If you use OLE automation, the instantiated object is opening the file. If you use a third party component to do the update, that software must open the workbook file (.XLS) in order to update it.
NOTE: Some methods require the runtime PC to have Excel installed, usually part of MS-Office installation.
