actually, BDE (borland database engine) is the older version of DBExpress.
Main difference is that DBExpress is cross-platform where ADO is only supported by microsoft OS. ADO will work without anything else, where DBExpress/BDE requires installation of a middleware (that can be included in your setup of your applications).

then, dbexpress component replaced the BDE pallet with a superior tecnology, am I right?

something that intriguis me is that when I make a query like this:

select * from clients

I noticed that using ADO query, it is loaded in my memory almost 60 mb although on the other hand when I use dbexpress, it is load in memory almost 15 mb.

Why?

by: epasquierPosted on 2009-10-19 at 05:33:59ID: 25604534

ADO is likely to use more memory because it is based on variants and activeX interfaces, where DBE is native Delphi
maybe also the implementation of the Query object does not load all the results in memory but only the first ones (I know that some Oracle DB comps use this technique when large results sets are returned). Try displaying all the results or do Query.Last to be sure that you compare equals things

yeah epasquier,

I noticed that too.

Ado load all the information in client memory while BDE or bdeexpress doesn't .

I need to find a way to manage this once I need to load the information in a grid.

If not for comparing memory usage, you don't have to bother with this. BDE and visual controls does it for you.
Only thing you can see is the fact that when you use the scrollbar to see the end of the results, some lag could occur because BDE is requesting the remaining data. But that's not an issue, as it will also prevent large amount of data to explode your memory and make the user waits minutes before viewing the start of it. I've seen it happen a few time, and I'm thankful for BDE implementation as it usually works better.
