Paradox to SQL

Hi,

I have an application written in Paradox years ago. I am going to release a new version. However I don't want to use paradox anymore. Can you guys recommend any other db's?

I have tried access but ado connection was so slow for access. Maybe I did something wrong. If I choose SQL, am I permitted to release SQL? Do I need to pay anything? Becasue currently 400 users are using it and I can not ask money as they have problem with their paradox.

Which one is faster and which one would you prefer? Which SQL db is free (if there is any)... I also need to know how can i convert current paradox tables to the new one.
