Get number of rows returned - using oracle DBI

Tags: how, select, find, get, returned
Hi

I'm using an oracle db and i prepare and execute a statement that may return any number of rows.
...
prepare_statement_differences();
$differences_sql -> execute;
while(@differences = $differences_sql -> fetchrow_array())
{....}

I would like to know the number of rows before i enter the while loop.
I tried to use:
use DBI;
prepare_statement_differences();
$differences_sql -> execute;
my $row_num = $DBI::rows;
...
but this only returned 0, and i suspect this to be the number of rows altered?
Since my sql only does a select it wouldn't alter any rows.
How do i find the number of rows returned?

Thanks
