date difference

Hi,

in my perl script i m using date command.

$prev_date has some value and then in one of the sub-routine, i use
$current_date = `date`;

how can i find the difference between 2 dates. i want the answer in minutes (hours is optinal)

GYI, the format of date is :: Thu Dec 2 12:50:56 EST 2004
