The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How to write a XML File

Tags: setnodetext, xpath, getnodetext, xml
Hi,

I am using XML:XPath, It works perfectly and I am able to search using w3c XPath standards. But I stuck in one place. that I use XPath setNodeText function to change my XML file, it reads that file search XPath in it and change the Text, but it doesn't save it on disk :(

Can any one please provide me with some example ..

my Code is
sub setConfiguration()
{
      my $sect = shift;
      my $key = shift;
      my $value = shift;
      my $xp = XML::XPath->new(filename => $ConfigFilePath);
      my $nodeset = $xp->find("//configuration/path[\@name=\"". $sect ."\"]/configValue[\@name=\"" . $key . "\"]\n");
      print "\nDF". $xp->getNodeText($nodeset);
      print "\nDFD".$xp->setNodeText("//configuration/path[\@name=\"". $sect ."\"]/configValue[\@name=\"" . $key . "\"]\n",$value);
      print "\nDF". $xp->getNodeText($nodeset);
}

I use XML to save my application configuration. and this function will be called with
&setConfiguration("DisplaySetting","ScreenWidth","800");
HOw can I modify above function to Save those changes within that function.

Thanks

Do you mean you'd like to save to disk what's being printed to the screen in the above snipette?  If so, you need only open a file for writing, and then direct the output to that file rather than to the screen:

open (OUT, ">xml_xpath_output.txt") or die "Unable to open xml_xpath_output.txt: $!\n";

sub setConfiguration()
{
     my $sect = shift;
     my $key = shift;
     my $value = shift;
     my $xp = XML::XPath->new(filename => $ConfigFilePath);
     my $nodeset = $xp->find("//configuration/path[\@name=\"". $sect ."\"]/configValue[\@name=\"" . $key . "\"]\n");
     print OUT "\nDF". $xp->getNodeText($nodeset);
     print OUT "\nDFD".$xp->setNodeText("//configuration/path[\@name=\"". $sect ."\"]/configValue[\@name=\"" . $key . "\"]\n",$value);
     print OUT "\nDF". $xp->getNodeText($nodeset);
}

Note that the output of all calls to setConfiguration() will be placed in the file, one after another.  There are other ways to do this (you could, for example, pass the subfunction the file to be written to), but I'm uncertian what it is you're trying to do...

If you're looking to save the entire $xp object to the disk, I guess the easiest way is to add something like this to the end of your code:

use Data::Dumper;
$Data::Dumper::Sortkeys = 1;
open (DD, ">xp_dump.txt") or die "Cannot open xp_dump.txt: $!\n";
print DD Dumper($xp );

Hope this helps!

Hi,

oops, sorry but you understand it in wrong ...

I need to save XML itself, that output can easily be transger as your example suggest. But  I need to save the Changed XMLFile back, so that my application can read that.

thanks

Do you mean you want to recreate the XML file after altering the entries?  I see no easy way to do this with XML::XPath (this doesn't mean there isn't one, just that I don't see one :)).  XML::XPath's strength (and purpose) is to de-construct XML, not create it.

Have you considered changing the values in the XML file using regular expression substitutions?

Sorry if I still misunderstand what it is you're trying to do...

:) nope this time you understood correctly...

about changing through regular experssion, is possible, but I want to do it "Correct way", I mean if I can alter is in memory why cannot i write it to file ..??

there must be some way ...that is what I am looking ...

Please

Hi,

Sorry friends that noone is going to get Points here :D

as I found the way to write XML file myself

So the Code is

sub setConfiguration()
{
     my $sect = shift;
     my $key = shift;
     my $value = shift;
     my $xp = XML::XPath->new(filename => $ConfigFilePath);
     my $nodeset;

     $xp->setNodeText("//configuration/path[\@name=\"". $sect ."\"]/configValue[\@name=\"" . $key . "\"]\n",$value); #TO change value

    #writing to file
     open(XMLFILE,">mydata.XML");
     $nodeset = $xp->find("//configuration"); ### Find root node
     pirnt XMLFILE $nodeset->get_node(1)->toString();
     close(XMLFILE);
     # HEre i miss the Comments and DOC Type for XML, that you can write manually by simple print statement
}
