The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

I'm a little confused about what you're asking.

Do you want to connect to a unix machine from a windows machine to start the script?  If so, you can use ssh to accomplish this.

Or, do you want to somehow run the unix-only perl script on the windows machine itself?  If so, install Cygwin, and you will have full unix/linux emulation.

I want to be able to excute the perl script which resides on a unix machine from an ant script which is on a windows envrionment. You suggest ssh, can you provide a default command using ssh to perform this.

Is the script located on the unix machine, but will be running on the windows machine?
Can you add the unix machine's drive as a network drive to windows?
Does the script use unix commands?

If you use ssh, this will actually run the script on the unix machine.  Is this what you want?

Is the script located on the unix machine, but will be running on the windows machine? yes
Can you add the unix machine's drive as a network drive to windows? no
Does the script use unix commands? not at present

If you use ssh, this will actually run the script on the unix machine.  Is this what you want? will ssh have to be installed on the unix machine as well

yes, ssh will have to be installed on the unix machine, and you will need to set up public key authentication (easy) so that you get passwordless authentication.  The command is:

ssh user@unixmachine /bin/cat script/pl | c:\bin\perl

If you're on a secure network, I think you can also use rsh (based on rlogin), but again, you'll have to set up passwordless authentication for the user in question (still easy).  In that case, the command would be similar:

rsh user@unixmachine /bin/cat script/pl | c:\bin\perl

Just to be clear, my previous comment tells you how to take the script which resides on the unix machine, and execute it on the windows machine.

If you want the script to be executed on the unix machine, then it's even easier:

  ssh user@unixmachine /usr/bin/perl script/pl
or
  rsh user@unixmachine /usr/bin/perl script/pl
