The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Using SMTP module to send mail

Tags: perl
Hi,

I'm trying to get a script i've written in Perl to email me the output of the queries i'm doing on a few sql servers, but for the life of me can't get the mail function to work. I was trying to use SendMail but keep getting this error;

Can't locate SendMail.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.7 /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.7 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.8 /usr/share/perl/5.8 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at connect3.pl line 4.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at connect3.pl line 4.

here is the code i'm using as the output is fine and works although i can't get the email to work:
my $out = sprintf("===================================================================\n");
my $out2= sprintf("QA not yet processed for 192.168.20.115(SP) is $results1\n");
my $out3= sprintf("QA not yet processed for 192.168.20.116(SW) is $results2\n");
my $out4= sprintf("QA not yet processed for 192.168.20.118(Pinnacle) is $results3\n");
my $out5= sprintf("Admin not yet processed for 192.168.20.115(SP) is $results4\n");
my $out6= sprintf("Admin not yet processed for 192.168.20.116(SW) is $results5\n");
my $to="myemail@mydomain";
my $from="user@mydomin";
my $subject="stats for qa and admin";

open(MAIL, "|/usr/sbin/sendmail -t" or die "Can't open sendmail\n");

print MAIL "To: $to\\n";
print MAIL "From: $from\\n";
print MAIL "Subject: $subject\\n";

print MAIL $out;
print MAIL $out2;
print MAIL $out3;
print MAIL $out4;
print MAIL $out5;
print MAIL $out6;

I had a friend suggest using the SMTP Perl Module to send email instead of SendMail. So i used cpan to download the module and i think set it up although i'm not sure if this is working.

any ideas?
cheers

The cause of the error "Can't locate SendMail.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl etc..", is because you don't have the sendmail module installed (or installed correctly) on your machine, and you have a line "use sendmail" included somewwhere in your script.  If you're not using the module, but calling sendmail (the mail server application, not the Perl module of the same name) directly, remove the "use sendmail" line from your script.

ok so how would i check to see if sendmail is setup properly. We are running Ubuntu 6.06 or is there a better way to send output via email?

No need to set up or install any modules assuming that sendmail is configured correctly on your system.

Here's a cleaned up version of your code.

Sendmail configuration is quite complex.  Does it work correctly as a mail server outside of the Perl script?  For a pretty good guide to configuring and testing Sendmail, see http://www.faqs.org/docs/linux_network/x-087-2-sendmail.html.  Also, of course, see http://www.sendmail.org/.

It might be easier to use Perl as a SMTP client, if you have another MTA you can connect to and rely on to deliver the mail.
