The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Listing all index files..

Hi guys hope u r well and can help :>)

I have a drive that contains a lot of files named "index.html".
These files are scattered through folders and subdirectories.

What Id like to do is the following:

1) Build a perl script that searches for all files named "index.html" on a particular given folder.
2) The script would scan this given folder and all subdirectories of THIS given folder and collect the full path and filename to each index.html file.
3) The script would then do the following....
a) In the directory where this script is executed, first check to see that there is no file called listindexes.html. If there is, first delete this file, and then recreate this file called listindexes.html
b) For each full path and filename returned for each index.html file, insert this full path and filename as a new line in listindexes.html in the following format....

<A HREF="<first full path and filename to index.html"><folder name (not full path) housing this index.hmtl></A>

where for example,

If the first full path and file name to index.html is

H:\rollovers\learning_areas\mysql_php\project_001#scriptdb_mysql\index.html

So, this entry in the newly created listindexes.html would be:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- listindexes.html
<A HREF="H:\rollovers\learning_areas\mysql_php\project_001#scriptdb_mysql\index.html">project_001#scriptdb_mysql</A>

If the second full path and file name to index.html is

H:\rollovers\learning_areas\\index.html

So, now listindexes.html would be:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- listindexes.html
<A HREF="H:\rollovers\learning_areas\mysql_php\project_001#scriptdb_mysql\index.html">project_001#scriptdb_mysql</A>
<A HREF="H:\rollovers\learning_areas\index.html">learning_areas</A>

You can see in the above that the title

eg.

<A HREF="H:\rollovers\learning_areas\index.html">learning_areas</A>
                                                                                  <----TITLE ------>
                                         is the
                                      folder "learning_areas"
                                       the folder in which index.html is stored.

So, basically,

The perl script is given a "parent folder" to scan for all index.html files it contains.
The script returns a list of the full path and filename to each index.html file.
It then first deletes a file called listindexes.html in the folder where the script is run, if it exists.
It then creates the file listindexes.html if it doesnt exist.
It populates the listindexes.html file with a new line for each index.html, whereby each line contains an ahref to the full path and filename to index.html, and the title for each is the foldername (not the full path) where that index.html file resides.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance. :>)

Youre a genius ozo!
That works perfectly.
Ozo, there is just one thing.
When the listindexes.html is created, all the lines are there, which is great, but there is no <br> tag at the end of each inserted line, eg..

<A HREF="vcp_310/vi3_blueprint_notes/index.html">vi3_blueprint_notes</A> <no <br> tag here......>
<A HREF="vcp_310/vi3_blueprint/index.html">vi3_blueprint</A> <no <br> tag here......>

Is there anyway to add automatically a <br> tag to your fantastic perl script for each inserted line?

Thanks so much ozo!
I worked the br out.

Just add it to the print line of ozo's code:

#!/usr/bin/perl
use File::Find;
$parent="H:";
open STDOUT,">listindexes.html" or die $!;
find( sub{
 $_ eq 'index.html' and print "",($File::Find::name=~m<([^\\/]*)[\\/][^\\/]*$>),"< br />\n"
},$parent);
