The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Pattern Matching Syntax Help Needed

Tags: Perl, 5
I'm very new to perl and am looking for assistance on building a simple pattern matching program that runs a command on a linux box, stores the output in a variable, then based on a pattern matching if statement runs a subroutine.  Here is what I am trying but it doesn't work for me:
------------------------------------------------------------
my $ACUSERVE = `/acu6/bin/acuserve -info`;
if ($ACUSERVE =~ /version/m) {
        print "good";
        &send_alert;
        exit;
        }
else {
        print "bad";
        &send_alert2;
        }
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In this case I always get the "bad" print to initiate and never matches to get the "good".  The command output is a multiline output that varies depending on status.  the example is below of the output of the command:
0 file(s) in use by acuserve on: computer.domain.com (PID 5761)
Server Port: 6523, AcuServer version 6.0.0

So I want to match on say for example the pattern "version".

Your assistance is appreciated.  The solution is probably a simple one for an experienced developer but due to the urgency of our needs I have assigned the appropriate points.

Thank you.

Are you sure $ACUSERVE contains "0 file(s) in use by acuserve on: computer.domain.com (PID 5761)
Server Port: 6523, AcuServer version 6.0.0"

can you just print $ACUSERVE and see if it contains the expected line ?

Thanks
Ned

If your response is failure of a command,the string $ACUSERVE will be empty.
Try printing the $ACUSERVE  after executing the command.

I have tested your code by passng "ls -ltr" and "ls -zl".If the command is success,the code we will get a expected output otherwise no.

When I run my perl script without declaring a print statement for the $ACUSERVE variable it still prints it on screen, but when I put a print statement in, it will print it on screen only once as when there is no print statement.  This leads me to believe that the $ACUSERVE variable is not retaining the output correctly as I would expect it to print on screen twice with the print statement in place.  Am I declaring the variable correctly to get it to run as a command outside of perl?

In addition, it will just print "bad" on the else condition but not the $ACUSERVE output when I place a print $ACUSERVE above the print "bad" statement.

it would better if you use system.
$var = system('command');

Thanks

One more thing, am I supposed to execute the $ACUSERVE command somehow aside from the way its setup in the code I posted above, and then print it?

The system command will not get the output in $var, you will only get the exit value.

It sounds like the acuserve program is not writing to STDOUT (which is what the backticks capture).  If it is writing to STDERR, you could redirect that to STDOUT, so it can be captured:

1:
2:
my $ACUSERVE = `/acu6/bin/acuserve -info 2>&1`;
print "acuserve=$ACUSERVE\n";
Open in New Window

I tried using the system instead as recommended, here is how I declared it, please correct me if I'm wrong:

my $var = system(`/acu6/bin/acuserve -info`)
if ($var =~ /version/m) {
        print "good";
        print $var;
        &send_alert;
        exit;
        }
else {
        print "bad";
        print $var;
        &send_alert2;
        }

Now what happens is that I do get an output to print for the $var variable but its not the expected output.  I get a number that prints "65280" which I have no idea what it means or where its getting it from.  When I execute the command above manually it always gives me the expected output and when executing the perl script it will first give me the expected output on the screen but after the if statement, the print statements there don't bring up the right output just the number mentioned.

> but not the $ACUSERVE
then this variable is empty, most likely 'cause the command did not return something

try to use:

  $ACUSERVE = `/acu6/bin/acuserve -info 2>&1`;
