The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Perl script to compare and replace in a document set

Tags: Perl
Hi,

I have two datasets of which I need to do a comparison and replace against.

My main dataset (Set A) contains 147K of documents - This has colour TIF files that need to be replaced by a set of JPEG files (Set B).

I need a Perl script to do a find and replace of documents in my Set A that are contained in Set B and the results outputted to notepad in tab delimited form

Thanks for your help!

Doug.

What is the format of Set A, Set B, and the result that you want?

04.28.2008 at 05:35PM PDT, ID: 21458772
AHh - my apologies.

Set A Format (Single Page TIF):

ABC0010010001.TIF
ABC0010010002.TIF
ABV0010010003.TIF

Set B Format

ABC0010010001.JPG
ABC0010010002.JPG
ABC0010010003.JPG

So where Set A and Set B match, replace the corresponding TIF with the correspondingly named JPG

Thanks

open B,"<SetB" or die "Can't open SetB $!";
while( <B> ){
   $h{$1} = $_ if /(.*)\.JPG/;
}
close B;
{local @ARGV="SetA"; local $^I=".bak";
  while( <> ){
     $_ = $h{$1} if  /(.*)\.TIF/ && $h{$1};
     print;
  }
}

OK - so if I were referring to Set A and Set B as directory locations - how would I achieve this?

Thanks

So would a replace be a copy of a file from one directory to another?
Why not just copy all of B to A?

04.28.2008 at 06:15PM PDT, ID: 21458875
Thank you for your patience with this one.

The reason exists because the contents of set A are in various folder structures - as below

\ABC
+---\001
        +---\001
                 +---ABC0010010001.TIF
                       ABC0010010002.TIF
                       ABC0010010003.TIF
        +---\002
                 +---ABC0010020001.TIF
                       ABC0010020001.TIF
+---\002
        +---\001
                 +---ABC0020010001.TIF

etc etc

Therefore a simple cut and paste will not do - as you can imagine Set A is 147K records with a lot of folder structure.

All help is appreciated.

Thanks

Doug

So you want to scam both directory trees for matches?
Does the full path need to match or just the filename?
Do you want to delete the .TIF files?

(I should be back in a few hours...)

04.28.2008 at 06:23PM PDT, ID: 21458901
I only need to scan directory Set A for all docs in directory Set B (there will be no duplicates)

Only the filename is to match.

I would like to Delete the .TIF files and record this into Notepad

Thanks for your help

I'm not sure exactly what you want to record into Notepad, but this should copy the files

use File::Find;
use File::Copy;
my %h;
find(sub{
/(.*)\.JPG/ && -f && $h{$1}=$File::Find::name
},"/SetB");

find(sub{
/(.*)\.TIF/ && -f && $h{$1} && copy($h{$1}",".") && unlink $_
},"/SetA");
Accepted Solution
