The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Perl script to merge files

I need a perl script that will merge 2 or more flat text files. So for instance, if I have two files:

File1 content:
john   doe     12/25/68   M

File2 content:
jane   smith   03/23/78   F

...then after the merge, the output file should contain:
john   doe     12/25/68   M
jane   smith   03/23/78   F

...and so on.
Thanks in advance.

you could try something like below.   This way you could do:
script.pl file1.txt file2.txt file3.txt etc > newfile.txt
1:
2:
3:
4:
5:
6:
7:
CONCAT: foreach(@ARGV)
{
	next CONCAT unless -f $_;
	open FILE, $_ or next CONCAT;
	print while(<FILE>);
	close FILE;
}

perl -pe1 File1 File2 > Merge
Assisted Solution

You have read the content from input files and append on the output file

@filenames=(file.txt,file2.txt...);
open(OUT,">>outputfilename.txt");
foreach $filename (@filenames)
{
open(FILE,"$filename") or die "Cannot open $filename";
$lines=<FILE>;
print OUT "$lines";
close FILE
}

perl -e 'system("cat file1.txt file2.txt > merg.txt");'

There is no need for perl... you can use cat on unix or type on windows.  The last example especially makes this clear - although it is platform specific...

perl -pe1 File1 File2 > Merge
works from the shell in either unix or windows.
within a Perl program, you can do

#!/usr/bin/perl
@ARGV=qw(file.txt file2.txt);
open(STDOUT,">outputfilename.txt");
print while <>;

Ok,
You guys have given me many choices... I'm a bit confused. Let's say that I want something non-perl (regardless of the title of my post). What code can I include in a .bat file? Thanks guys.

05.15.2008 at 11:42AM PDT, ID: 21576806
If it's windows, use type:
type file1.txt file2.txt > file3.txt

If it's unix, use cat:
cat file1.txt file2.txt > file3.txt

For windows, This is all that needs to go in the .bat file?

type file1.txt file2.txt > file3.txt

Yep.  Create some dummy files and try it.

I just tried this on a Windows 2003 server and the merge file was not created:

type D:\Inetpub\ftproot\api\test\file1.csv D:\Inetpub\ftproot\api\test\file2.csv > D:\Inetpub\ftproot\api\test\file3.csv

Will this work with .csv files?

05.15.2008 at 12:01PM PDT, ID: 21576933
It should work fine.  I just ran the following on Server 2003 and got a file:

type "C:\Documents and Settings\so\one.csv" "C:\Documents and Settings\so\two.csv" > "C:\Documents and Settings\so\three.csv"

The user running the script will need write permission to D:\Inetpub\ftproot\api\test and read permission for D:\Inetpub\ftproot\api\test\file1.csv and D:\Inetpub\ftproot\api\test\file2.csv.

Also, if any of the file names contain a space (none do in this example), the filename will need to be enclosed in double-quotes.
