A presumed simple math problem has me stumped

Im trying to solve what I thought was a simple problem: to determine whether an even number of time intervals have taken place since midnight.

All parameters in the code below are double. I have verified that minutesSinceMidnight correctly reflects what its name implies. I thought the result value should be equal to zero 4 bars out of 5. But instead what I get is result being equal to zero 44 bars out of 45 bars. What am I missing? -- Thanks.

intervalSize = 5;
x = minutesSinceMidnight / intervalSize;
y = floor(minutesSinceMidnight / intervalSize);
z = x - y;
if ( z > 0 ) {
result = 0;
}
else {
result = 1;
}
