The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Looking for a simple solution to port database application to an SQL multi-user environment

Asked by blarke in Programming Languages, Delphi Programming, SQL Server 2005

I have a Delphi database application (ADO/WIN32) working well on a local SQL instance with transactions.

When moving to a remote SQL instance of the same data (changing the connection strings accordingly), it only allows access to tables for a single user (timeouts). My problem is that all tables are open throughout  the application! All datacontrols refer to open tables. Tables are only closed as user exits the app. Also, when the user ends the application, he may choose to commit or rollback all changes using transaction method. This was a very simple structure for me getting started doing this application.

But now, the depth of hell is showing. I thought, intuitively, not being an educated programmer, that the method of transactions would automatically cache data, and commit changes, allowing for multiple users. Yeah, I know - data conflicts would occur. But, hey...

So what should I do know? My datacontrols requires for tables to be open. If I close them, data don't show. Any better use of the method of transactions? Caching tables (how is that done, precisely - thought ADO did it by default?) Any way that I still can work with all tables being open throughout the client application running?

Sorry, about the overwhelming nature of this problem - I am mainly looking for general directions keeping the notion of "simple" in mind.
