The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Trouble converting VBscript to Visual Basic
Tags: Visual Basic - Visual web developer
Hi Experts
I've been using VBscript for a while and am OK'ish with it. I've been asked to put some of my scripts into an html environment for other people to use. I'm using Visual Basic Web Developer 2008 and just running tests at the moment but there are some instances where the transfer is not as smooth as I'd like :o)

EG my variables, reading from Active Directory, do not work and I have no idea why.
The snippet I'm having issues with is:
            result = (adspath)
            Label2.Text = (result)
            ' wscript.echo(samaccountname & " " & adspath)
The error message is "Conversion from type 'Field' to type 'String' is not valid."
I know the variables are not declared but Option Explicit is turned off and so I don't need to declare them.

Your help would be appreciated.

The full script is:

Protected Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click

        ' Finds user details given the first name and surname
        ' and extracts to a log
Option Explicit Off
Option Infer On
        Dim shl, fso, Dir, user, user2

        forename = TextBox1.Text
        surname = TextBox2.Text

        oConnection = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
        oCommand = CreateObject("ADODB.Command")
        oConnection.Provider = "ADsDSOObject"
        oConnection.Open("ADs Provider")

        oCommand.ActiveConnection = oConnection
        'Set the "Page Size" to something smaller than 1000
        oCommand.Properties("Page Size") = 50
        'Specify the search criteria
        oCommand.CommandText = "<LDAP://dc=domain,dc=org,dc=uk>;(&(objectCategory=user)(sn=" & surname & "*)(givenname=" & forename & "*));ADsPath,givenname,samaccountname, sn,mail,telephonenumber,facsimileTelephoneNumber,showInAddressbook,streetAddress,memberOf;subtree"
        oRS = oCommand.Execute
        count = 0
        'Enumerate the results
        While Not oRS.EOF
            adspath = oRS("adspath")
            samaccountname = oRS("samaccountname")
            result = (adspath)
            '  Label2.Text = (user & " " & user2)
            Label2.Text = (result)
            ' wscript.echo(samaccountname & " " & adspath)
            oRS.MoveNext()
        End While
        oRS = Nothing
        oCommand = Nothing
        oConnection = Nothing
    End Sub
End Class

Thanks for the reply but I'm afraid it didn't work. I tried a few variations on the theme but all to no avail.
Is it the way I'm calling the variable into play?

I've tried a couple of other scripts that connect to AD in different ways and everything does as expected except writing that information to a label instead of a logfile. I'm fairly confident it's syntax that's the problem.

Any ideas?

Try this:

            adspath = oRS("adspath").Value
            samaccountname = oRS("samaccountname").Value
