The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How do I assign a distinct unique number to each field returned.  I prefer to do it in sql and not create an index as the table as I do not have sole control of the table.  In the below desired output description this would be RowIndex.

SQL 2000
Statement to add rowindex to:
select distinct(Description) as LawSpecialty from lawspecialty

desired output
LawSpecialty              RowIndex
Bankrupcy                   1
Divorce                        2

the easiest option is to use a table variable

declare @Tab table (LawSpeciality varchar(8000) , RowIndex int identity  )
Insert into @tab
select distinct(Description) as LawSpecialty from lawspecialty

SELECT * FROM @Tab

08.15.2007 at 06:34AM PDT, ID: 19699313
in sql 2005 you may use ROW_NUMBER
select YourField, ROW_NUMBER () over (order by  YourField)  from YourTable

but i think this won't work in sql 2000 :(

I think aneeshattingal has the most effective solution, points to him.
just a minor correction:

SET NOCOUNT ON
declare @Tab table (LawSpeciality varchar(8000) , RowIndex int identity  )
Insert into @tab ( lawspeciality)
select distinct(Description) as LawSpecialty from lawspecialty
SELECT * FROM @Tab

SELECT a.Description, RowIndex =  ( SELECT COUNT(1) FROM (SELECT DISTINCT(Description)  FROM LawSpeciality ) b WHERE a.Description > b.Description  ) +1
FROM (SELECT DISTINCT(Description)  FROM LawSpeciality ) A

aneeshattingal,

Could you do me a favor and explain the logic behind
RowIndex =  ( SELECT COUNT(1) FROM (SELECT DISTINCT(Description)  FROM LawSpeciality ) b WHERE a.Description > b.Description  ) +1

Also what is the function of count(1)?
how does the where a.Description > b.description ) + 1 work?

COUNT(1)  will work similar to COUNT(*)  or Count(SomeColumn)
In order to get the count, we need to compare some values, here i am checking this condition "a.Description > b.description"

08.15.2007 at 08:14AM PDT, ID: 19700368
SELECT a.Description,
Id = ( SELECT COUNT(1) FROM (SELECT DISTINCT(Description)  FROM LawSpecialty ) b WHERE a.Description > b.Description  ) +1
FROM (SELECT DISTINCT(Description)  FROM LawSpecialty ) A

How would I add a where onto this where id in (1,2,3)

08.15.2007 at 08:43AM PDT, ID: 19700653

Rank: Genius

select * from  (

SELECT a.Description,
Id = ( SELECT COUNT(1) FROM (SELECT DISTINCT(Description)  FROM LawSpecialty ) b WHERE a.Description > b.Description  ) +1
FROM (SELECT DISTINCT(Description)  FROM LawSpecialty ) A
) C
where id in (1,2,3)
