SQL Update statement between two databases

Hi Experts

I have an update query which basically needs to update a single field where the Id's match. I need to do it via a query rather than DTS. I am having issues specifying the server.dbo.database etc. My query is thus;

update SERVER1.DB.dbo.Material
set SERVER1.DB.dbo.Material.Name = SERVER2.DB.dbo.Material.Name
FROM SERVER1.DB.dbo.Material, SERVER2.DB.dbo.Material
where SERVER1.DB.dbo.Material.id = SERVER2.DB.dbo.Material.id

This returns an error of .....contains more than the maximum number of prefixes. The maximum is 3.

I have tried setting an alias but cant get the syntax correct. Can anyone suggest a solution

What happens if you take out the "FROM" line?

update SERVER1.DB.dbo.Material
set SERVER1.DB.dbo.Material.Name = SERVER2.DB.dbo.Material.Name
where SERVER1.DB.dbo.Material.id = SERVER2.DB.dbo.Material.id

The servers name are server1.db and server2.db?
 if so then try to enclose the names between []

ie [server1.db].dbo.Material ...

OKay... looks like you can't specify more than one table in an UPDATE statement, so you have to do something like this:

update SERVER1.DB.dbo.Material
set SERVER1.DB.dbo.Material.Name = (SELECT SERVER2.DB.dbo.Material.Name FROM SERVER2.DB.dbo.Material WHERE SERVER1.DB.dbo.Material.id = SERVER2.DB.dbo.Material.id)
WHERE EXISTS
(SELECT SERVER2.DB.dbo.Material.Name FROM SERVER2.DB.dbo.Material WHERE SERVER1.DB.dbo.Material.id = SERVER2.DB.dbo.Material.id)

Yes, the [] should help seal the deal.
I needed to do the same querying a similar style server name

Select * from [FOO-DB103].[My_Workspace].dbo.tablename

Starfailure; I have tried that but it still complains about the exposed No of prefixes
csk_73 & xDJR1875; I have tried your advice but the query seem to see through the [] as it still returns the same message.

Any idea how to use set an alias and use that instead ?

Yes, that was the one I was referring to. Removing the From line didnt change the error message

Sorry, yes I tried that too. It failed on the 5 parts to the name once again. I am sure that if this can be overcome the query itself will run fine.

update [SERVER1.DB].dbo.Material
set [SERVER1.DB].dbo.Material.Name = (SELECT [SERVER2.DB].dbo.Material.Name FROM [SERVER2.DB].dbo.Material WHERE [SERVER1.DB].dbo.Material.id = [SERVER2.DB].dbo.Material.id)
