I want to load the top 100 records when a form in vb2005 loads. There are about 5006 records in this table but it will load too slowly if all of the records have to load at one time.
I have this that works to load the first 100 records by last name.
SELECT TOP 100 *
FROM Employees
ORDER BY LastName
I am not a SQL guru so have no idea of how to load the rest when the form loads( if possible in SQL) or to allow the user to click a button to load the other records. Perhaps it could allow all the lastnames beginning with A to load, then allow the user to Select the B's etc.

No, it's really not an issue with the access database. In vb6 it loads quickly, but in vb2005 it loads slowly. Its vb2005 and how it handles the data.
So all I really need it a SQL statment that will allow me to load say the first 100 records, then load the other 5000 records. Its a small table, less than 25 fields.
That is what would work best for me.
To my knowledge, you cannot load 100 records and then load the remainder into a form via any sQL statement I know of. You can load the first 100, but then the form is bound to the query for those 100 records. The instant you change the record source to include the last 4900, you will lose the first 100. As Nelson said, it doesn't make any sense that vb2005 is that much slower that vb6. Have you tried all his suggestions?
mindserve I have noticed the same thing with many of my visual studio 2005 projects, but as soon as I compile them and run them from the executable and not the environment, the speed increases dramatically. I think it has to do with how visual studio hooks into the application to get the debugging interface to work.
well here is something you may want to try, create a new object that handles the loading of the data, then start the execution on a separate thread, the overall loading will be slower however they will have access to the information as ti is loading. It should load quick enough that a user will not notice a problem. Having the data load from a separate thread can add to the complexity but also give the ability of your program to be responsive while user is messing around with the data.

I would question why the form opens slowly with all 5006 records. I have forms bound to tables with I meg+ records with no problems. Is LastName indexed? How many fields in the table Employees?
Speed up Form
First run the performance analyzer (tools, Analyze, performance). You can select just the queries and forms that are causing problem but I would recommend selecting everything and see what it comes up with.
