Self Joins and NULLs

I'm trying to perform a self-join on a table between an ID column and a couple of reference columns in the same table. I'm like to include all the rows where the Msg_Orig and Msg_Prev values exist within the Msg_Id field of the table but also include those that are NULL. If a row has a non-null value in either Msg_Orig or Msg_Prev and that is not a valid Msg_Id value then I do not want it included.

Hopefully the code snippet below sort of explains what I'm trying to do but obviously it doesn't work! ((execution hangs, probably due to the null clause causing an unjoined table)
