E.g. if you had:

Well, I just realized MS SQL 2000 doesn't support this nice feature of the SQL language. Oracle does, and most other databases I know, even that the free products (PostgreSQL and MySQL) are better..
However this may help you, depending what language your application is in:

One more thing, since a relation (a table) is always unordered, the solution I gave will basically get some random 100 records. Actually it won't be random, but technically a select statement is not guaranteed to return the rows in any particular order unless you specifically order them. In the following example I have ordered them.
