Question

Adding a unique ID to a table.

I have a table that has some Address Types that I want to insert back into the same table with an addition to the description.  However when I tried to run the insert statement I found that the ID is not automatically generated.  Is there a way in the select statement to just add the id by a number so that I can create a unique ID for each insert.

you can make the ID column either as UNIQUEIDENTIFIER and insert NEWID() into that column or else make that column IDENTITY, in that case the values will be incremented automatically and no need to explicitly insert the value into that column

Sorry I forgot.  I cannot change the table.  It is a database that is being used by third party software and they do there id's within the code.  But I am working on the back end and just wanted to insert the rows so I don't have to input on entry at a time using the GUI.

I was missing the , in the query and needed to go back to just doing a normal value + value and not the add().

This is what worked.

select      id + 28,
            'MC-' + description,
            inactive,
            11
from tr_address_type
where inactive = 'n'
