SQL date value in query

Hi,
I have a table with multiple records and are distinguished by date.
in my where clause is it possible to only show the records with the latest date?
for example i have
record1  2009-10-10
record1  2009-10-05
record2  2009-10-10
record2  2009-10-05

result
record1  2009-10-10
record2  2009-10-10
