Question

SQL select

Asked by: Mr_Shaw

I have a two columns Provider adn ProviderDesc.

There are some records which have been entered twice. Once with a ProviderDesc and once without.

I want to select all those records which have either no ProviderDesc OR a ProviderDesc.

I don't want to select those records which have no ProviderDesc AND a ProviderDesc.
I am trying to put the following logic into SQL code. But can't quite think how to do it.

I have tried the following but it does not work.

SELECT DISTINCT Provider.Provider, [Desc].ProviderDesc
FROM         HRG4_Base AS Provider right OUTER JOIN
                          (SELECT DISTINCT ProviderDesc
                            FROM          HRG4_Base) AS [Desc] ON Provider.ProviderDesc = [Desc].ProviderDesc
ORDER BY Provider.Provider

SELECT *

WHERE  (Provider IS NULL OR ProviderDesc IS NULL)
AND (Provider IS NOT NULL OR ProviderDesc IS NOT NULL)

select distinct .... union select ... is a bit redundant. UNION (without ALL) is implicitely distinct.

The above sql is close to what I am after.

Here is example of the records which I have
Provider  ProviderDesc
a               house
a                Null
b                 Car
c                  Bike
d                  Null

I don't want to select the row when Provier = a and ProviderDesc = Null since it already has another value.

Hi Shaw,

Check this query

SELECT DISTINCT A.* FROM HRG4_Base A
      INNER JOIN
(SELECT Provider, Count(DISTINCT(ISNULL(ProviderDesc, ''))) AS Counts from HRG4_Base
GROUP BY Provider) B
ON A.Provider = B.Provider
WHERE B.Counts = 1

Thanks RajkumarGS, I changed it a little and I think this works.

SELECT DISTINCT A.Provider, A.PRoviderDesc FROM HRG4_Base A
      INNER JOIN
(SELECT Distinct Provider, Count(DISTINCT(ISNULL(ProviderDesc, ''))) AS Counts from HRG4_Base
GROUP BY Provider) B
ON A.Provider = B.Provider
WHERE B.Counts = 1 order by Provider

See attached.

    • 185 bytes

This query should work for SQL Server.

Sorry this is the answer

SELECT     Provider, MAX(ProviderDesc)   from ( select distinct Provider, ProviderDesc from HRG ) AS x group by Provider
ORDER BY Provider

>> I don't want to select those records which have no ProviderDesc AND a ProviderDesc
