Question

How to know whether a checked box is checked?

I have a table of rows with values and checkboxes.
I want to know how many checkboxes are checked dynamically.
When a user checks the box i need the value of that row or cell.
How do I do it?

The "checked" value will be true/false in javascript

Try this:

Do I need to write a javascript function 'alert()'
or is it just enough if i use it in the <input> tag?
I am a newbie to this.So please be generous in helping me.

Sorry - wasn't a very full answer.. :)

Take a look at the below script (it is a complete web page example so save it as a .html file and run it).  It uses jQuery to be able to easily select all of the checkbox elements.

But I dont have a button to check how many are ticked.
Can i include something like 'onclick"fnCountEmUp();' inside each <input type="checkbox"> tag only??

Sure, include it within the onclick handler like this:

I have included it.
Everytime I check or uncheck it shows 0 boxes clicked.
Since the javascript function is called everytime I check or uncheck the box, the v_count is becoming 0.
How to preserve the previous count.

In that case, place the v_count declaration outside of the function like:

Hi.  I have attached a complete html file which I have tested in firefox3.5, chrome 2 and ie8 - the count is correct each click.  Maybe something else in your implementation isnt working?  If you cannot see the problem after looking at the code in the example, would you post your complete page?

Yea.
The count is fine when v_count is inside the function.
But when I put it outside function as you suggested, it does not work.

Put it inside - my example works with it inside the function - I suggested outside because you said it didnt work with it inside..  Why don't you post your page and I can take a look?

Ah - just spotted your issue - you have repeated single quotes inside the jQuery selector:

$(''table#countemup input[type="checkbox"]'')
 
should be:
