Date format with Perl

How do I write a small perl script to output the current date with the format that looks like this:

22/Apr/2007:00:21:18 -0800

I tried this:  $time_stamp = `date`; print DATA "$time_stamp";

but it gives me this format:  Sun Apr 22 17:55:17 MDT 2007

use POSIX;
$time_stamp = strftime"%d/%b/%Y:%T %z",localtime;

or in unix you could also do
$time_stamp = date +'%b/%m/%Y:%T %z'`;

from your current output, you can get the expected format...

$time_stramp  = "Sun Apr 22 17:55:17 MDT 2007";
@res = split(' ',$time_stramp);
print "$res[2]/$res[1]/$res[5]:$res[3]-0800";

# i didnt get about 0800, hope thats related to MDT

use POSIX qw(strftime);
print($strftime("%d/%b/%Y:%H:%M:%S %Z",localtime));

THIS:

use POSIX;
$time_stamp = strftime"%d/%b/%Y:%T %z",localtime;

GIVES me this:

23/Apr/2007:10:13:19 %z

I should clarify that I'm on Solaris 8 and the "-0800" is the GMT offset for the local timezone.
Any more suggestions, please?

Yes, %z didn't work for me either, use %Z instead. AFAIK, you can only print the time zone name or abbreviation, note the GMT offset

$time_stamp = strftime("%d/%b/%Y:%T ",localtime).sprintf "%0#3d%02d", tz_local_offset() / 3600,abs(tz_local_offset())%3600/60;
