countdown with buttons pause resume and restart

i want to create a countdown with buttons resume, restart and pause. it will include only mm:ss
minute and seconds. i will put on this to my smil presentation. in short, the countdown will entegrated to my presentation. presentation's length is 5minute. and there are buttons to pause,resume and restart the presentation. so i wanna build a countdown to my presentation, with the same buttons.

here is my presentation buttons and javascript code that i have found from internet.. i dont know if a button can work for 2 things at the same time.. for example, clicking on to pause will pause the presentation (that works), and will pause the countdown..

thanks a lot mate.. that works.. really thank u, but there is 2 problems, actually not problems but, i want to modify it like that; restrart button will reset the counter, and your code just do the same job as resume button.. and i want to start countdown automatically, when the page is loaded.. and lastly can you help me about calling two functions with one button?
